Who first 'discovered' kopi luwak?
Coffee was introduced to Indonesia in the 17th century by the Dutch; luwaks were already there but were (obviously) eating other things. At some point the luwaks must have discovered coffee, decided they enjoyed it and it became a regular part of their diet. We expect that plantation workers who didn't have access to the valuable coffee beans harvested for the Dutch tried some "waste" beans and serendipitously discovered kopi luwak.
What is the difference between Arabica and Robusta coffee?
Arabica and Robusta are botanically
separate species; they grow in relatively different
conditions and produce coffee that has different tastes and characteristics.
For a more comprehensive explanation please refer to the pages linked to below.
Most English language sites share the view that Arabica
is the superior tasting coffee however other countries
such as Italy (home of espresso), France and many Asian
countries do not necessarily share this opinion.
What is a luwak?
Luwak, Lubak and Musang are all regional Indonesian names for the Asian Palm Civet (Paradoxus hermaphroditus), a cat-like animal common to many south east Asian countries. There is an entire page devoted to the Luwak linked to below. Meet The Luwak
What is kopi luwak?
Kopi Luwak is coffee made from coffee beans that have been eaten by a Luwak. Regular coffee cherries are hand picked and the flesh of the berry is removed by mechanical means. When a coffee cherry is eaten by a Luwak the flesh is removed through digestion in the stomach of the Luwak, and the beans are collected after they have passed out of the Luwak.
Does Animalcoffee farm luwaks or keep them captive in any way to produce kopi luwak?
Animalcoffee does not and never has farmed luwaks and we refuse to buy from sources that do. All Animalcoffee kopi luwak is collected in plantations and the surrounding jungle and is the droppings of wild luwaks. In addition to the animal welfare aspect of farming luwaks we believe that luwaks that are left to select their own cherries produce better quality kopi luwak.
Do Luwaks only eat coffee beans?
Luwak's are omnivorous and will eat whatever is available including fruit, chicken and eggs however when coffee is in season and the trees are covered in bright red cherries they naturally become a major part of their diet.
Do you ship to my country/ how long will it take (any shipping question)?

Does Animalcoffee sell green/ unroasted kopi luwak beans?
Yes. In the 'Coffee Pouches' section on the Product pages of the site each size pouch has the option to purchase either as roasted beans or as green beans.
What payment methods you accept?
Animalcoffee accepts all major credit cards via Paypal as well as bank transfers, please email us for our bank details. We do not accept AMEX.
How many cups of coffee will I get from Xg of kopi luwak?
A definitive answer to this question isn't possible as the amount of coffee you use will depend on how you make coffee, for example a small espresso basket may hold as little as 7g while a large double basket will hold up to 24g. Drip filters and siphons all use different quantities and personal preference for the strength of the final result will also affect the amount used.
